Mrs. Jamie Chong, SAI

I discovered I wanted to be a teacher at the age of 17. I was on track to attend college once I graduated high school, but I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was working as a Preschool Teacher’s Assistant when I met a boy with Autism who had a significant impact on my life. I saw his learning potential and felt a personal responsibility to help him grow academically.

I have been a part of Simi Valley Unified School District since I was in kindergarten. I attended Vista, Sinaloa and Royal High School. Upon graduating high school, I was hired as a Special Education Paraprofessional. I worked part time for SVUSD while attending California Lutheran University. Since being hired as a paraprofessional, special education has been my life. Over the last ten years, I have worked as a social skills teacher, a behavior therapist and a tutor to homeless and at-risk youth.

I am currently in my third year as a Special Education Teacher at Katherine. I enjoy the challenge of special education and I am reminded daily of why I chose this career. I am passionate about helping students achieve their full potential. I love that my job allows me to work closely with my general education colleagues. I believe education is a team approach between the children, parents, educators, administrators and the community.

Values and Beliefs:

  • All children can learn and reach their full potential given opportunity, effective teaching and appropriate resources.
  • No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship
  • Whenever possible, the student should be a partner in his/her educational program.
  • Student needs are best met by a team approach.
  • A classroom should be a safe learning environment for all
